About Kerala

Kerala is a state on the Malabar Coast of India. It was formed on 1 November 1956. It is the twenty-first largest Indian state by area. It is bordered by Karnataka to the north and northeast, Tamil Nadu to the east and south, and the Lakshadweep Sea to the west. Kerala is the thirteenth-largest Indian state by population. It is divided into 14 districts with the capital being Thiruvananthapuram. Malayalam is the most widely spoken language and is also the official language of the state. Kerala has the lowest positive population growth rate in India, the highest Human Development Index, the highest literacy rate. Kerala experiences humid tropical rainforest climate with some cyclones. The state has a coast of 590 km. Anamudi in the Idukki district is the highest peak in south India. Kerala's western coastal belt is relatively flat compared to the eastern region, and is criss-crossed by a network of interconnected brackish canals, lakes, estuaries, and rivers known as the Kerala Backwaters. Kuttanad, also known as The Rice Bowl of Kerala, has the lowest altitude in India. The country's longest lake Vembanad, dominates the backwaters; it lies between Alappuzha and Kochi. Kerala's 44 rivers include the Periyar, Bharathapuzha, Pamba.
